Rosewood Vienna occupies the former Erste Bank building—a landmark structure in the heart of Vienna's historic centre, Petersplatz and the Old Town. The transformation of this Viennese institution into an ultra-luxury hotel required a signage approach that honoured both the building's heritage and the refined contemporary sensibility of the Rosewood brand. Rather than conventional architectural signage, we developed a system that integrated with the hotel's interiors as objects of quiet beauty, inhabiting spaces without imposing on them.

We drew inspiration from the early 20th-century Secession movement and the Wiener Werkstätte, which pioneered modernism, minimalism, and the Gesamtkunstwerk—the concept of total artwork—through geometric forms and functional aesthetics. This informed every decision, from the development of a bespoke typeface to the treatment of signage as sculptural elements rather than utilitarian fixtures.

We created Graben, a custom typeface inspired by the geometric precision of the Wiener Werkstätte. The font balances modernist restraint with warmth, reflecting Vienna's design heritage while ensuring legibility.

Geometric patterns drawn from Viennese Secession motifs appear across placard borders, room number plates, and wayfinding elements. These subtle ornamental details add layers of visual richness without compromising clarity.

We designed freestanding placards and wall-mounted pieces that function as objects in their own right. These elements rest on shelves, nestle into niches, or occupy surfaces throughout the hotel, creating a flexible, multifunctional system adapting to the character of each space.
